    Conceptual design studies of pure and compound helicopter commercial short-haul transport aircraft for initial fabrication in 1980 were performed to determine their technical and economic feasibility. One-hundred-passenger configurations were optimized for minimum direct operating cost consistent with producibility and marketability, with emphasis on proper account of mass properties, performance and handling qualities adequacy, and suppression of internal and external noise.     Exact Boundary Controllability of a System of Mixed Order with Essential Spectrum

    International audienceWe address in this work the exact boundary controllability of a linear hyperbolic system of the form u′′+Au=0u^{\prime\prime}+Au=0 with u=(u1,u2)Tu=\left(u_{1},u_{2}\right)^{T} posed in (0,T)×(0,1)2(0,T)\times(0,1)^{2}. A denotes a self-adjoint operator of mixed order that usually appears in the modelization of a linear elastic membrane shell. The operator A possesses an essential spectrum which prevents the exact controllability from holding uniformly with respect to the initial data (u0,u1)\left(u^{0},u^{1}\right). We show that the exact controllability holds by one Dirichlet control acting on the first variable u1u_{1} for any initial data (u0,u1)\left(u^{0},u^{1}\right) generated by the eigenfunctions corresponding to the discrete part of the spectrum of A. The proof relies on a suitable observability inequality obtained by way of a full spectral analysis and the adaptation of an Ingham-type inequality for the Laplacian in two spatial dimensions. This work provides a nontrivial example of a system controlled by a number of controls strictly lower than the number of components. Some numerical experiments illustrate our study

    Hybrid Software Development Approaches in Practice: A European Perspective

    Agile and traditional development approaches are used in combination in todays software development. To improve the understanding and to provide better guidance for selecting appropriate development approaches, it is important to analyze such combinations in practice. Results obtained from an online survey strongly confirm that hybrid development approaches are widely used in industry. Our results show that hybrid development approaches: (i) have become reality for nearly all companies; (ii) are applied to specific projects even in the presence of company-wide policies for process usage; (iii) are neither planned nor designed but emerge from the evolution of different work practices; and, (iv) are consistently used regardless of company size or industry secto

    Feedback control of thermal lensing in a high optical power cavity

    This paper reports automatic compensation of strong thermal lensing in a suspended 80 m optical cavity with sapphire test mass mirrors. Variation of the transmitted beam spot size is used to obtain an error signal to control the heating power applied to the cylindrical surface of an intracavity compensation plate. The negative thermal lens created in the compensation plate compensates the positive thermal lens in the sapphire test mass, which was caused by the absorption of the high intracavity optical power. The results show that feedback control is feasible to compensate the strong thermal lensing expected to occur in advanced laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Compensation allows the cavity resonance to be maintained at the fundamental mode, but the long thermal time constant for thermal lensing control in fused silica could cause difficulties with the control of parametric instabilities.This research was supported by the Australian Research Council and the Department of Education, Science and Training and by the U.S. National Science Foundation, through LIGO participation in the HOPF
